Vietnam’s Rural Transport Project

The Situation

In 2000 the World Bank together with the Department for International Development (DIFID) and the Vietnamese Ministry of Transport joined forces to implement the Second Rural Transport Project, which aims to reduce poverty in rural Vietnam and provide basic road access to rural communities in 41 project provinces.

"One of the primary objectives of the project is to develop improved information collection and management, which in turn will enable better informed and more transparent decision making. Previously, provincial and ministerial officials had to work with highlighted hard copy transport plans, often using out of date base maps, which significantly reduced the efficiency and effectiveness of those plans" she added.
