Birmingham City Council

With an annual revenue budget in excess of £2 billion and employing 50,000 staff, Birmingham City Council is one of Europe’s largest local authorities. It is responsible for a mostly urban area of some 270 square kilometres. The city is the centre of the West Midlands region.

For a long time the Council had experienced problems in managing, sharing and disseminating map-based information. In the Planning Department, for example, the majority of spatial data was stored on paper maps. It was also organised by division, with little knowledge of each others’ datasets, which in turn led to unnecessary duplication and wastage.
