National Address Management Framework (NAMF)

NAMF Certification Logo

Pitney Bowes Software is proud to be the first organisation in Australia to provide NAMF-accredited geocoding and address validation solutions.

"Pitney Bowes Software’s initiative to be the first to gain NAMF certification is an essential enabler for government and businesses in Australia to better access a single point of truth for digital address information."

Dan Paull, Chief Executive Officer of PSMA Australia

"I am pleased to see that Pitney Bowes Software has achieved the first certification of its compliance to NAMF. PSMA Australia was contracted by ANZLIC to implement the framework and develop the compliance certification scheme and I encourage all other companies that provide address validation services to also achieve certification."

Drew Clarke, Chair of ANZLIC - The Spatial Information Council

What is NAMF?

The National Address Management Framework (NAMF) provides an overarching set of standards for the process of verifying an address and exchanging digital address data between government departments and organisations. The stated overall aim of the NAMF is to provide a unique address where one address equals one location.

NAMF is governed by ANZLIC - The Spatial Information Council and has been ratified by all states and territories through the Council of Australian Government (COAG).

In its simplest definition, NAMF provides a set of standards that prescribe how an address, either postal or physical, should be structured and exchanged.

What are the benefits?

The most immediately recognisable benefits of NAMF are as follows:

  • Confidence:

When accessing Geocoding and Address Validation solutions through a NAMF-compliant engine, a single, authoritative national dataset for verifying addresses is utilised.

  • Standardisation:

Since a set of strict standards for address structure have been defined as part of the framework, the sharing of address information between users, departments, and businesses can be made more efficient.

  • Contribution:

Subscribers will also be able to take advantage of being able to provide notifications on addresses that may not be included in the authoritative dataset through a central system.

Why is NAMF needed?

The primary drivers for creation of NAMF have been the financial and human costs of unreliable address data, which have rapidly risen as the range and use of digital address information increases.

Whilst these costs amount to millions of dollars each year for Australians, it has been during recent emergency services and disaster management situations, such as the 2011 Queensland and Victoria floods, that the requirements for reliable address information has been fully recognised.

How do I use NAMF?

In order to begin using the framework, organisations and government departments must utilise a Geocoding and/or Address Validation solution from a NAMF-certified provider. As part of the certification process, commercial vendors must implement specific web services and controls that adhere to the NAMF prescribed set standards.
